Job Profile
Reporting to the Development Manager, the technical writer will be responsible for creating and updating end-user documentation and training material in various media, including WebHelp, FrameMaker documents and PowerPoint presentations. This role requires an individual with 1-2 years of experience writing end-user documentation in the software industry. This position requires close interaction with other functional groups and knowledge of the software documentation principles, tools, and processes. The position also requires an ability to edit the work of others with diplomacy and great attention to detail.
Responsibilities
• Documenting the specifications, design, features and operation of applications
• Writing and editing user manuals, help systems and other technical documents
• Designing and formatting documents using document-creation software
• Interviewing applications developers and other technical resource personnel to ensure the accuracy of all information presented
• Work closely with all project members to research new and updated functionality, and then document it for the target audience.
• Quickly become a power-user for any application that you are documenting.
• Create and manage project documentation for internal and external audiences.
• Manage documentation reviews and ensure timely completion to meet project deadlines.
• Assist with other technical documentation projects as required.
• Create new or update existing documentation in agreed upon deliverable formats.
• Manage content to ensure that all information is accurate and up-to-date.
• Manage content versions to ensure solid version control.
• Assist with and/or write functional requirements as required.
Experience
• Experience writing functional requirements and other Business Analyst-type documentation.
• Solid knowledge of technical writing processes, standards and styles.
• Experience in determining documentation requirements and evaluating the requirements as each project progresses.
• Strong communication and relationship building skills.
• Experience with effectively juggling multiple projects simultaneously.
• Experience working in a single-source environment.
• Experience in creating and managing graphics.
Requirements
• Ability to communicate complex information clearly and concisely
• Excellent interpersonal skills in order to elicit detailed facts from subject matter experts (eg. Applications Developers).
• Advanced writing and editing skills
• Need to be adept in document-creation applications such as Adobe FrameMaker and Acrobat and Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
Education
• Bachelor's Degree in English, journalism, or information sciences
• Diploma or Degree program in Technical Writing
