RFP for Content Management System

Company: Poetry Foundation
Location: Chicago Preferred, Anywhere Considered
URL: www.poetryfoundation.org
Time frame: TBD

The Poetry Foundation (TPF), publisher of Poetry magazine, is an independent literary organization committed to a vigorous presence for poetry in our culture. Findings from the Foundation’s 2006 major research project—Poetry in America—reinforced the Foundation’s commitment to building a leading American web site for poetry. The study found that the Internet is an underutilized channel for achieving the Foundation’s mission of placing the best poetry before the largest possible audience. The goalof the Foundation’s website (poetryfoundation.org) is twofold: to use the web to engage a broad audience in poetry and to support the Foundation’s other initiatives and programs.

Now in its third year of operation, poetryfoundation.org has won a Webby award and receives more than 30 thousand visits and displays more than75 thousand pages per day. Its success is based on it being a comprehensive poetry resource, comprised of both an extensive online library with more than 8,000 poems and growing, and a lively, frequently updated editorial program. This content includes the monthly contents of Poetry magazine and weekly online feature articles, and information about the Poetry Foundation and its programs. It also includes a very active blog, bestseller list, and daily news headlines. This offering led to a Webby award in 2007, distribution of our weekly podcast by alt.NPR podcast, and regular links to our site from the New York Times, Arts and Letters Daily, the Chronicle of Higher Education, and numerous poetry and book blogs.

We are now working on improving the underlying technology, including the content management system (CMS), our tool for publishing poems, articles, audio, video, and visual content on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

Our current CMS is a proprietary system, which is licensed from and provided through a managed service. A separate MovableType blog is also installed on our servers. A managed, hosted service solution was the right technical and operational choice for us during our first three years of operation. Our site has grown in complexity and web technology has continued to evolve. Now the Foundation would like to move to installing a CMS on our own servers to achieve greater operational flexibility both in terms of drawing upon the talents of multiple web development firms and plugging in other industry-standard modules for enhancing the site’s services and functionality.

The Foundation is seeking a web development firm with extensive knowledge of content management systems for highly editorial sites driven by a MySQL database. The Foundation would like to migrate from its current CMS to purchasing and installing a CMS on Poetry Foundation servers, taking full advantage of open source and open standards as appropriate.

The CMS for poetryfoundation.org should provide an industry-standards-based modular platform (technical architecture) into which many common web services and functionality, such as SEO and user ranking and recommendation, can be integrated.
