Technical Writer position available (Arlington, VA)

The Industrial Research Institute (IRI) is the leading trade association of companies and federal laboratories working together to improve their research & development (R&D) capabilities. IRI members invest approximately $100 billion in R&D annually. IRI strives to deliver outstanding value to members by:

• Providing insight and actionable learning into R&D’s best practices;
• Creating networking opportunities with technical leaders; and,
• Quickly disseminating knowledge in appropriate formats.

IRI is seeking a technical writer to help IRI deliver more value to its members. The technical writer will capture knowledge and keep members informed by writing and editing products for the IRI website, newsletter and journal in a way that articulates, interprets, summarizes and/or explains research findings and insights gained from association meetings. Preferred candidate would combine multimedia knowledge and strong communication skills with substantial knowledge about the basic principles of R&D in an industrial setting to educate across the entire spectrum of members’ technical experience and desired formats for receiving information.

Necessary Skills:

• Ability to write in a clear and concise manner and to be able to convey information appropriately for a wide range of technical/managerial experience (from C-level to mid-level manager);

• Strong listening skills and ability to ask appropriate probing questions; and

• Appreciation for the visual, especially for graphics and formatting.

Required:

• 4-year Bachelor degree (prefer a bachelor's degree in either a scientific or business field or in English or journalism with technical knowledge);

• Substantial knowledge of concepts of business management, with a preference for those understanding the management of R&D in an industrial setting;

• Minimum of 4 years experience in a similar capacity, performing comparable tasks;

• Experience in a customer service environment and a customer focused mindset;

• Demonstrated ability for independent action and to assume responsibility;

• Interpersonal skills necessary to coordinate and manage project activities and to work as a team member in a diverse environment; and

• Proficient computer skills in Word processing, presentations, spreadsheets, as well as knowledge of how to leverage Web 2.0 tools.
