Job Description:
We are looking for an enthusiastic, hard-working managing editor to work as a valued member of our editorial staff. The position requires a motivated editor with excellent writing, editing, and management skills. The editor will be responsible for working with the Editor-In-Chief and the design team, receiving assignment details, recuriting / managing a body of freelance correspondents, and submitting final copy by a deadline. The editor must ensure all submitted copy follows our style guide.
This position is responsible for shepherding assigned projects from beginning to end, and editing through typesetting while continuously improving both his or her own work and the processes in which he or she is involved. Specific duties include:
• Managing time to meet internal project deadlines and milestones
• Formatting, editing, and proofreading text and cross-checking it
against other sources
• Making formatting decisions, and fitting text into specified templates
• Ensuring that all edited text goes through any necessary reviews
• Providing complete project turnovers and instructions to typesetters
• Creating and maintaining internal reference documents
• Providing editorial support to correspondents
• Managing an independent group of freelance correspondents and ensuring
their work follows style guidelines, and they are maintaining deadlines
• Submitting correspondent invoices
• Attending bi-weekly meetings in production office
Qualifications:
Strong editing skills and knowledge of Chicago style essential
Education and Training:
Bachelors degree in Publishing, Communications, English, Technical Writing, or a related field, plus related experience in the relevant field.
Prior Related Experience:
At least six months of experience as a paid copyeditor required.
Experience managing freelance editors or writers preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
•Ability to pass stringent copyediting test required.
•Strong proofreading skills required.
•Attention to detail, flexibility, and good communication and multitasking skills required.
•Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people required.
•Ability to work both independently and as part of a team required.
Workload & Fees:
The editor may plan on being responsible for assigning, editing, and submitting 40-50 stories a month with room to expand if requested. A typical assignment ranges from 625 - 1000 words and has a two week and three day turnaround time. Fees are paid by story and are $0.06 a word.
