Job Description
The copywriter will serve an integral role in the development of the USO’s Web site (www.uso.org). The copywriter will work closely with all internal teams involved in the development process as well as the Agency of record. The copywriter will be capable of grasping communication and organizational challenges, devising imaginative and intuitive copy and will have a well-rounded knowledge of the Web, as well as a thorough familiarity of leading trends in usability.
Part-time (20 hrs/ week). Work from home and/or USO office in Arlington, VA.
Responsibilities
• Develop new copy for all USO.org pages except those linked to a donation form (roughly 40 pages)
• Assess and develop the USO’s Web site content
• Manage internal inventory of images and video’s for relevant use to support copy
• Interact with project team to understand business objectives and user goals
• Collaborate on site navigation, labels and content organization
• Collaborate with Marketing and Communications team to determine the conceptual and copy direction of branding and advertising initiatives
• Repurpose, edit and create site content with the ability to conceptualize ideas for web content
• Require fast turn-around on short notice. The right person will work well under those pressures. The ability to accommodate this is critical.
• Ability to analyze written materials and detect errors in fact and/or missing but requisite information, as well as, to conduct research to correct or validate information and/or determine missing information.
• Work with marketing and communications team to develop copy and be the lead voice for consumer facing web site
• Collaborate with other team members, distill ideas and develop messaging
• Ensure consistency and continuity across all site pages
• Edit existing content as needed
• Develop collateral material as needed
• Bring diverse creativity to the development process
Requirements
• Previously written copy for military charities/services/organizations, etc.
• A very detail oriented person with an excellent, positive thinking, can-do attitude
• 3-5 years minimum experience writing copy. Nonprofit or cause related web site copy writing is a plus
• Knowledge and execution of SEO best practices is a plus
• Exceptional writing skills, including the ability to write in a range of voices and styles for varied projects, with diverse audiences and concisely communicate complex or demanding subject matter
• Ability to multitask and meet tight deadlines
• A BS degree or diploma in English, journalism, communications or a related field
• Familiarity with AP style and Strunk & White’s Elements of Style. Strong in spelling, grammar and punctuation, without relying on the built-in functions of computer software.
